Pushing yourself to your physical limits is a transformative experience. Whether it's cardio, lifting, martial arts, or bodyweight training. You should be doing all of these, but the most useful to functionality and with the least barrier to entry are cardio and calisthenics. When you push your body to its breaking points, it unlocks your mind. Physical suffering can train the spirit. As both the physical act of working out and the metaphysical act of overcoming existential suffering are similar processes. Your mind and your body are inextricably linked to each other. An out of shape man with a good wit is utterly useless, so is a fit man without intelligence.

"No citizen has a right to be an amateur in the matter of physical training… what a disgrace it is for a man to grow old without ever seeing the beauty and strength of which his body is capable."

I've actually never had a gym membership while in the van. What I did initially was hosed myself down out in the woods with a garden sprayer, shampoo and body wash, but I progressively got more minimalist. Now I just scrub my whole body with a bristle brush soaked in witch hazel, and every few days shampoo my hair in the bathroom sink when I finish my route. My brother recently confirmed upon seeing me that I do not smell with this setup.

PNW is actually the most forgiving region in the US for full time van life imo. Summers brutal but survivable, winters cold but still comfortable with only a normal sleeping bag and blanket. Nearly everywhere else in the country, one of these extremes spikes hard enough that you are forced to either migrate seasonally or seek climate controlled shelter.
