Basically, when Babylon conquered Judah and forcibly relocated the upper classes and bunches of the artisan class to other parts of the empire to make revolts less likely, the Edomites migrated in to fill the vacuum. They got all blended in with the Judahite lower classes, then Persia conquered Babylon and relaxed the displacement restrictions. Basically, the only way to tell the difference between Edomites and Judahites at this point was by their religious practices. And then the Macabees came along and forcibly converted all the Edomites.
