I dabble in it a little, mainly python+panda3d. Python is easy to pick up and has a lot of pre-fab stuff that is easy to import and get working. Problems are easily searchable. I went with panda3d because it includes almost everything I needed so I didn't have to find and wrap my head around more packages. I figure with the tools we have today, one guy ought to be able to pull off something that took maybe 10-15 guys to make in the mid to late 1980s. I am nowhere near the point of having anything to show off yet though, its hard work and I have a day job and kids.

This is a good point; we are completely saturated with AAA titles. I'm totally fine with playing a good, based, game that only lasts a few hours, if the price is right.
