I've always thought this in the sense that people say they are catholic or jewish are usually not religious at all. People will label themselves as catholic just because their grandfather was.

Take a look at Seventh day Adventists' views on the Catholic church and papacy for some insight and backstory (hint: the Catholic church and the Pope are ushering in the antichrist and mark of the beast). I think most Catholic followers are good people but they are being led astray by leadership.
