It's wild watching the evolution of the TV christmas special. I've always been interested in them and have an archive that I pick a few out of every year, going back to the (((Rankin Bass))) ones.
Back then they were pretty explicit about Christmas having a totally commercial message. Silver and Gold are garbage (as an economic foundation) but you can't have a *true* Christmas without Silver and Gold ornaments. Toys are not only necessary for Christmas, but are sentient and feel bad when you don't play with them etc
By the 90s, the message was often *anti*-commercial; the true meaning of Chirstmas is friends and family, not toys and trees (but still *definitely* not about Jesus).
I don't have many recent ones (because they tend to suck) but the general message seems to be "Christmas isn't that big a deal, don't worry about it".
Sounds like a great time for far Right parties to put the Christ backnin Christmas.
