Not long. Before the Heath Ledger Batman movie, this was known as a "Glasgow Grin" ; originating there in the early 20th century. Scottish actor Tommy Flanagan (Braveheart, Gladiator, Sin City) has it.

Point being it's not so much a matter of being cooperative with the attacker as it is having poor situational awareness & preparation for a crisis situation.
