I would say up to 60% of what we were taught across all classes was a complete lie, with that being up to 80% in "history" and "social studies" classes. We had literal 4 years of holocaust propaganda, both in "history" as well as in English, though at least in English the Communist tyranny was also taught. Science was closer to 40%, with climate garbage, the timeline of the earth, and evolution being taught as completely settled, but more immediate and observable things were being taught accurately. Math was probably the least Zogged, but I was in High School when they introduced Obama Core, so I dont know how bad it is now.
I am a firm believer that since Homeschooling worked for the majority of the human history and produced us a people who could land on the moon, we should return to it. The State has no role in education outside of ensuring that parents are in fact doing their jobs, but nothing beyond that.

It is not public. It is a government school system. The government holds the purse strings and the puppets dance along.
