It's been a thing for a few decades. Bounce a laser outside the visible spectrum off glass, measure deviations in the reflection caused by vibration of window, reproduce the sounds that caused said vibration.

I used to be a private investigator. I remember first hearing about that in 2000. Saw it for the first time from a an FBI guy I met a couple years later. It's been a round for a long time.
