Shepards don't beat their sheep. The rod was used to guide, not inflict injury. This saying has been used to justify violence against children by people who don't understand it.

If you've never known a parent who loved their children enough to refrain from punishment when they were angry, and knew parents who used punishment as an excuse for vengeance, that would explain much. That is absolutely not normal or right.
