They give it away in the headline. He was "beloved." He mistook his success with some people as a natural gift that let him "reach across the divide" and appeal to _anyone_. Standard White guilt fantasy. He lost his ability to appropriately sense danger.
On top of that, the little hoodlum is in a "Department of Corrections School." What the fuck was _school_ going to do here? Well, I'll tell you: it simply generates the ability for the state to bill the federal government for "education."
