Marx himself said that Communism was the natural progression of Capitalism. All the revolutionaries did was try to skip a step.

Indeed. Lenin took the technological determinism of the first-generation gradualist social democratic Marxists and replaced it with a more voluntaristic view.

According to the Leninists, entire historical stages could be accelerated. Mao tried to skip capitalism altogether. But China considered itself capitalist since Deng and, more recently, Xi said that China will reach socialism by, I think, the year 2050 (?).
