It was more of the right to secede from the union, each state joined independently under the assumption they'd be free to leave should they decide the federal government was not working in their favor. With each state essentially acting as their own miniature country, their right to continue the union with the others should also under their own jurisdiction. The northern states were largely controlling the trade and thereby the entire country while the southern states felt they were wronged.
It was about tariffs, the south wasnt happy the north was taxing their exports, which were their main source of income since they werent industrialized. Lincoln hoped to start a slave revolt, which is why he issued the emancipation proclamation, but since the south was technically a separate country at the time, it meant literally nothing unless the north took a territory, and it didnt apply to the slave states in the north.
