It was more of the right to secede from the union, each state joined independently under the assumption they'd be free to leave should they decide the federal government was not working in their favor. With each state essentially acting as their own miniature country, their right to continue the union with the others should also under their own jurisdiction. The northern states were largely controlling the trade and thereby the entire country while the southern states felt they were wronged.
The South was wronged because they did a tax reform that would have hit the South too much, essentially making the South pay for the North to build stuff in the North.
