If you go to talinn or Riga, you see the beauty of the city and its livelihood, and then you travel right outside and see the dilapidated infrastructure of the soviet union that pock marks the entire region. A time of great repression but also a time when these nations could produce anything at all. In a desperate bid to remove themselves from the influence of their eastern neighbors, they have lost any semblance of autonomy whatsoever, their infrastructure, their religion, and their way of life. They have traded being soviet polities with being western ones.
