The sudden, violent death of a well-known political figure during a period of existing tension is a common way to start massive change. Archduke Franz Ferdinand and Martin Luther King, Jr. are a few examples.

My daughter goes to a high school that is mostly hispanic, 75%. She said practically the whole school cheered--teachers and students--on the news that Kirk was killed.
