Like Breadpilled said, just say something around you to her or actually give her a real compliment. Example: I saw a girl with super white shoes so I told her then talked about what she was shopping for and so on then go for number which she gave me or ask "Do you have a man in your life?"
I use to approach women all the time and it is very easy after approaching more than 10 you get in the groove.
If you are not confident then approach employees. If still not confident then read "The Flinch" by Julien Smith. it is free online and helps you understand why you are not confident and what you can do to defeat the flinch.
Approaching a girl is more about you learning about them and figuring out is she right for you.
Why rush for the # when you can learn about her right there?
