To forgive your family, friends, neighbors, brethren, and people is one of the highest callings and noblest of things. Without forgiveness none of us can be saved, as it's core to the Christian faith.

Jesus forgives us. Good people forgive. You hang out with bad people if they don't forgive.
Forgiveness is a necessary foundation of healthy groups, regardless of size or context. This doesn't mean crimes go unpunished, though. Forgiveness is a necessary means to engender healthy relationships, because we all err and make mistakes. Judeo-Christians use "forgiveness" to push self destructive altruism, where good people are taken advantage of over and over and over. That's not forgiveness and that's not righteous, and it's not what God has ever asked of us.
