He was a Christian german refugee who went to Syria so that his family wouldn't be killed by the allies. The middle east at the time held a lot of axis sympathies but were officially neutral and thus avoided the wrath of the west and the soviets. A fair few germans had the same idea as him. The soviet umbrella over the Arab states later on also helped that, and it made those countries effectively untouchable by foreign interests until the end of the cold war.
