The actual Southern accent is a lot older than the midwest accent we assume is "standard" English. A lot of the things you think make them sound retarded are actually things we've been using since the middle ages.
If you figure out what they are saying and pay attention, some of the dumbest sounding Southerners are actually geniuses.
