Even 2000 years ago, fakes were a problem. Like the largely edomite pharasees who blended Babylonian practices into the old temple religion and called it their oral tradition.

I was just reading through some OT and it's even worse. As soon as we took Israel we allowed the Jebusites to remain in Jebus, which would later become Jerusalem. Then the Jebusites who were devoted to destruction by God were even allowed to join the Levites.
