They were. They were kicked out ! Sviatoslav 1st of Rus from Rurik dynasty destroyed their state,killed many of them including their nobles and priesthood - but some of them unfortunately fled and survived.

By the way Bogatyr Sviatoslav were assassinated by their or byzantine agents at the end,but to this day his deeds are first and true source of jewish hatred towards Russians.

You have it clear in the title: Khazaria were conquered (and those slavers were turned into slaves,so they were running)
