One of the Converso surnames in Spain for those Jews who converted to Christianity (wink) during the age of the Inquisition is "Farago", and is where we get the modern use of the word.

If a "Farago" moved to France at some point, "Farago" would have been Franc-ified into "Farage".

"Farrago" means "mixed" or "hodgepodge", by the way. Rather fitting if what you say is true.
