Spain was invaded by Muslims, and Jews, even though they had lived in Spain for generations, sided with the Muslims and helped them. Most famously, they opened the gates of Trinidad, letting the invaders in.

I was today years old when I learned I'm an honorary Spaniard.
Actual Spanish people are pretty cool. The Anglo-Saxons got along with them pretty well, more or less, throughout history despite the political differences.
The actual Spanish that came to the Americas were the foundation for a lot of our Western culture. The "cowboy" culture comes directly from the Spanish, who learned how to ride horses and manage cattle from the Romans of all people. The modern Rodeo is a direct-line descendant from the Coliseum. You can actually trace some of the events back through history all the way to the Roman days. IE, barrel racing is probably descended from chariot racing.
Most of the "Hispanic" people you see day-to-day are NOT the Spanish who came from Spain to America. Those people are living it up in the cities in Central and South America, laughing at the plight of the poor natives and the mixed-races. The ones we see crossing the border into the US are NOT Spanish, but cross-breeds or full-breed natives.
I was surprised when I moved down to Texas where are lot of Spanish people joined the Anglos who seceded from Mexico to form Texas. They called themselves "Tejanos" and they are just as white, if not more white, than most white people. They love hanging out with whites and they do not associate much with the border jumpers. Today a lot of them won't even accept being called "Mexican-American". No, they are 100% American and although they speak some Spanish, they are NOT Mexican, not even a little bit!
