May be a bad place to ask, but I’ve been thinking about getting back into some retro games, and some of the newer indie games that aren’t to tough to run. Do any of you have, and recommend a steam deck? I see quite a few for decent prices nearby, and was thinking of grabbing one.

steamdeck 2 (like the official from valve) comes next year its going to run steam OS so its probably gonna get better performance without winjew 11 with all its bloat

alternatively if you feel like drop 800 euros (or possibly 900) the "Xbox" Ally X from ASUS ROG is going to be a decent contender for "gaming on the go"

i frankly thought of it and then i remembered i can just emulate PS2 games on my ROG phone so buying a steamdeck is kinda redundent for me

If you don't need anything more powerful than PS3/X360, then a steam deck is overpowered. A second hand laptop with a dedicated GPU will be enough for everything up to GC & PS2.

There are other retro handhelds in more varied form factors for much less if that's more your cup of tea

Yeah, with Windows 11's absurd hardware requirements, many businesses are throwing away perfectly good computers, so the last few years have been the best time to get a used computer off eBay.

I don't recommend it for the type of gaming you're looking to do. I specifically bought one to have access to the thousands of games I have on Steam only to be met with a vast majority of them not being supported. Furthermore, the battery life is fucking atrocious. It might last 3 and a half hours or so playing games that are not very graphics intensive

I do have a nice steam library with things from past sales I haven’t played yet, but this is the first I’m hearing of things not being supported. Dam, that sucks. As far as battery life, as long as it can handle at least 2.5 hours, that’s ok with me. Does it charge pretty quick, and I’m guessing you can play it while plugged in?

If you use the charger it comes with, it seems to charge pretty quick. I've used other chargers though in a pinch, and it takes forever that way.

As far as the games, it's really weird what is and isn't supported. For instance, the "Tales of " series. Vesperia, Symphonia, and even the latest game Arise work flawlessly, but for some reason other entries in the series like Berseria aren't supported.

I’ve never heard of those, but that does sound strange. I’ll check them out.

My coworker has a bunch of mobile gaming devices, his opinion was steam deck is garbage, ROG ally is the way to go. My personal opinion is they all cost too much, I'd rather build a gaming PC.

The only reason I’m even looking at it is I know someone selling a lightly used one for a great price. The reason I don’t want to build a new desktop setup is because it takes up a bunch of space that kind of has to be dedicated, and I know I’ll spend way too much money and overdue it. I have too many frens that have already been trying to get me to build and hop back on after my ten year hiatus. It’s recipe for disaster. I have no self control when it comes to “building”. I’ll go full retard for sure. I also figured if I used the deck for a year, I could probably sell it and get at least half my money back, and then build something if everything starts to settle down a bit as far as hardware is concerned. Maybe I’m too optimistic.
