The candidate they don't want simply won't be selected to receive a major party nomination. Sure, but there’s also the wildcard factor that they can now control. By shunting anyone who would challenge the uniparty into yet another party, they can dispose of “alternatives” to the primary narrative in a way that they can directly control. Clearly they believe that simply ignoring results is now too conspicuous and dangerous to them. Whether that’s actually true is another matter; they *believe* it’s true.
