They truly are a signal of opulence these days. Back when you'd buy wine or spirits by the cask, you'd want a transitory vessel between it and your glass, because having a cask in your parlour isn't classy or practical. But now, you buy things by the bottle, so pouring your blue label scotch or whatever high end liquor into another, unlabeled bottle is kind of asinine. And if you're serving something cheap like Southern Comfort out of a crystal decanter, you're a fraud! FRAUD I SAY!
