Germans were the largest immigrant group into the USA. more than Irish, by quite a significant margin. I would hazard to guess that the second most spoken language inside the USA besides english was german.

Theres an old legend that apparently the national language was put to a vote between German and English, and they tied, so there was no official language declared.

Sure, that's definitely why all of the country's founding documents and influential writings are in English and every president was a native English speaker (except Van Buren who natively spoke Dutch).
