Thomas Jefferson imagined an entire nation of farmers who owned their land and kept it for generations.

The hierarchy is probably farmers as the most essential, then distributors / merchants, and then craftsmen and technicians. If you can't cut it as a farmer, maybe you should run a shop or be a trucker, and if you can't run a shop, be an engineer.

I was thinking about this the other day; the industrial revolution, and accompanying population boom, was largely synthetic. That is, it was created by a tiny minority and isn't holistic. The Boomers were bred to be a labour force to manufacture for the entire world for a few decades and then die.

That said, a significant part of our population collapse is due to our levels returning to normal because those levels were never sustainable.
