Although they approached a number of companies, the only funding they could get to start the company came from the CIA's venture capital arm and the Founders Fund, owned by Thiel himself.
Where did Thiel get this money? He was a cofounder of Paypal along with *drumroll* Elon Musk.
Founders Fund also invests in both SpaceX and Neuralink, potentially giving Thiel ownership of a space-based internet network capable of directly interfacing with human brains anywhere on the planet.
