Beethoven and Mozart lived before copyright. This is proof that copyright did not advance the arts. It created a pathway for more media to be profitable. In fact a pathway for most media to be profitable if properly marketed. So we created a pile of garbage.

14 y.o. Mozart famously copied the Miserere mei from memory. It was forbidden to transcribe and was used exclusively at the Sistine Chapel during matins as part of the Tenebrae service on Holy Wednesday and Good Friday.

However, he gained much fame for his recreation of Miserere, Pope Clement XIV summoned him again to Rome to praise his musical prowess. He was awarded the Chivalric Order of the Golden Spur on July 4th, 1770.
