In retrospect the machines were the good guys because the alternative was mixed race underground orgy land aka ZION.

Definitely the good guys. They could have exterminated humanity, but were preserving us and a copy of our civilizational peak. They didn't need humans as batteries, because the first movie outright said they had fusion.

Despite the oracle being an old nigger lady, her character in the story is actually more important than neo himself.

She's the only reason neo exists and is the only reason the matrix operates as shown in the films.

She is the embodiment of the machines psychological study of humans, their attempt at understanding choice as something other than a difference engine.

You could say she's a machine with a human conscious, and with this realization you understand the machines are searching for their divine inspiration and creativity... things that they don't possess.

The part of the programming that is represented as the oracle believes the machines ascension is tied in with its creator, humanity.

As a stark contrast, the Architect is willing to shut everything down if neo makes the "incorrect" choice in the chamber...

"there are levels of survival we are prepared to accept"

Oh yeah, great. Live on hell planet with scorched skies in standby battery mode.

Super awesome legacy.
