this form of narrative telilng in present tense is into canadian culture. We go "so I am walking " or "so I am driving" and clearly you aren't so context sets it up as past and the story present tenses on. Inever really connected that phenomena in our culture I have noticed before ( americans say "I was walking" and "I was driving" or whatever) to native IQ till you said that
