Yes. He was criticised for it by some of his circle. Hitler's biggest fault was that he was too nice and compassionate which is really twisted in the sense that the jews effectively tarnished his legacy into making him out to be some evil person. If Hitler had half the cold-heartedness the jews made him out to have, he'd probably have won.
