I've never understood how that would possibly work that way...why not just scan fingerprints? They're difficult to fake and you can make it a limiting factor in transactions (no prints, no transaction). Why would you ever need a mark!? As I recall, it's not meant to be a tribal thing, but something printed or tattooed on you that you have to use everyday to survive in an evil society or somesuch. Like the prophecy of Tyre, chewing the cud and so forth, another biblical failure that should have been omitted or maybe got mistranslated.

The bible just says that it's a "mark". For all I know, it could be a birthmark (doubtful since it's a choice), but it symbolizes worship of the beast.
