Something that is inescapable in the gospels in particular is that Jesus emphasizes *how you live your life* trumps all else, functionally, regardless of all the theological mumbo jumbo.
I think there's a strong argument to be made that "knowing" Jesus comes through your actions and how you orient yourself towards the world and other people, rather than organized religion or intellectual assent. He himself says that many will come before him, claiming not to have served him, only to be contradicted by their lives in review ("When you did these things for the least of these, you did them for me.")
In any case, I'm sure he means the church *today* is entirely rotten, which I agree with wholeheartedly. What it was XXXX years ago is no longer relevant to solving our situation.
just do it son, the (((Church))) is entirely rotten from the inside out
hell that's what jesus would've wanted too, as he drived the money changers not with words, not with prayer, but with Force
No, if churches are hopelessly corrupt, He would want you to create your own.
"For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them."
