In truth there probably is more freedom of speech in Europe in practice.
This is because in Europe there are labor protection laws and most people who are employed by a big company can't be fired easily, the company needs to go through a whole disciplinary procedure with evidences etc. And if one loses his job, he still has access to healthcare.
In America if your boss suspects you're racist you can be fired without a reason.
