Imagine, if you will, a marketplace in the center of town. Everyone brings stuff to the marketplace everyday, and they trade for the stuff they want with the things they have.
Since it's hard to find people to trade with who have the exact things you want and want the exact things you have, you have an intermediary. The intermediary will basically buy and sell anything for a fair price, based on supply and demand.
Show up, hand over your goats to the intermediary, and they hand you $50 or whatever it is worth. Then you can use that to purchase furniture or bread or whatever.
**THIS IS EXACTLY HOW MONEY HAS WORKED FOR MOST OF HUMAN HISTORY.** The people issuing currency would use that to "buy" stuff, and then accept that currency to "sell" stuff.
The reason why governments got involved is they realized they could "buy" things they need to fight wars (food, clothing, etc...) and then they could force people to pay them in the form of taxes. The King of England once took sticks and split them down the middle so they could not be forged. He marked them with how much they were worth and bought stuff with them. Then he required people pay taxes with those sticks based on what land they owned or whatever. Those sticks are still around today and extremely valuable.
The way the Nazis got out of their hyperinflationary cycle was pinning currency to labor. If a man did 8 hours of work for the government, they were paid a certain amount. People who sold stuff to the government also were paid likewise. There was no other way to create currency other than working more or creating more stuff. All of a sudden, inflation disappeared and the government could "buy" everything they needed without worry.
