well of course, but i'm talking about both background and being divorced from the culture, and part of what i see as the process of ethnogenesis. As i said, if you are fresh off the boat you're still whatever european is in your background. But if you've a) been here a while enough to assimilate for generations and especially b) ethnically blended in the sense of multiple european ethnicities, you can't really identify with said european peoples beyond semi-distant ancestry. You're just american. And that's not a bad thing to be.
