"We're all in this together" is the thesis of the film. It's pure irony in that the characters are demonstrably not all in it together, and the main character is given special treatment. At the same time, it is completely literal, in that the same vicious bureaucracy built by the "haves" to subjugate the "have nots" torments and then swallows the protagonist - one of their own.
