A spinning dreidel? 🤔
Watanabe is the creator of "Cowboy Bebop," which is one of the best anime series ever made. This new series is unfortunately quite cheap compared to 'Bebop and looks like more Doomer shit. Apparently, there aren't any more traditional animators left in the world to employ. Everything is cheap, quick, easy digital slop. You draw the character once and then "rig" a 3D model to move however you need in the scene.
That's not art. That's "content." Anyhow, don't think this show has the message we need right now.
I’m a traditional animator. I’ve been doing it professionally for 32 years. People assume I like anime because I’m an animator, but I don’t care for it. The style is hard to enjoy without analyzing the motion.
I’ve worked on plenty of projects where they want an anime style because they either think that style is popular, or they don’t have the budget. No one wants ‘drawn’ animation anymore, it’s too expensive. We animate rigged characters. I haven’t hand drawn animation for a client since Space Jam. Long time ago…
Wow. I check in on the industry from time to time. I've always admired Traditional animation as basically sorcery. I know a lot of work was farmed out to Korea (shows like *Invader Zim* around 2003) until digital animation gained enough momentum that it took over almost entirely by 2012. The world is losing so much of it's skilled artists. If Disney would invest in producing another properly animated film, I think it would sweep the box office.
I animated various characters on Space Jam. 😬 There are sites that name animators based on the character name. I’d be doxxing myself, and I’m not yet done saying racist shit on the internet.
Okay, cool. I remember seeing it in cinemas back in the day. "Babe" was also playing at the same time. Those were much better times in America. That was just about when the purchasing power for the dollar peaked; it's been in freefall every since.

What did you do on *Space Jam,* BTW?
