You already made a fictional map so you might as well make it a fictional world, no?

That being said, you could merge the two by making an alternate earth with different geography.

OC allows you to be more free and creative in the writing, altered/alternative history binds you to reality too much. And as you might have noticed, reality is ridiculously unrealistic and retarded, and sticking to it is often weird.

However to create good OC is difficult, and alternate history at least provides a foundation. So you pick some event, insert a "what if" twist, and from there on you can change things. But you are bound to actual history and have to cause the changes like a ripple effect.
