# How to Make Potassium Nitrate (KNO₃)

## Materials Needed:
- **Ammonium nitrate** (NH₄NO₃) – from cold packs
- **Potassium chloride** (KCl) – salt substitute (e.g., "NoSalt", but pharmaceutical grade KCL is better)
- **Distilled water**
- **Coffee filters** or fine cloth
- **Heat source** (stove/hot plate)
- **Glass containers** (heat-resistant)

## Procedure:

### 1. Dissolve Potassium Chloride (KCl)
- Mix **40g KCl** in **100mL hot distilled water**.
- Filter using a coffee filter.

### 2. Dissolve Ammonium Nitrate (NH₄NO₃)
- Mix **45g NH₄NO₃** in **100mL hot distilled water**.
- Filter the solution.

### 3. Combine Solutions
- Mix both filtered solutions.
- Reaction:
  `NH₄NO₃ + KCl → KNO₃ + NH₄Cl`
- Heat gently (do not boil) while stirring.

### 4. Crystallization
- Cool the solution slowly (KNO₃ crystals form).
- Refrigerate to maximize crystal yield.

### 5. Filter & Dry
- Collect crystals via filtration.
- Rinse with **ice-cold water** to remove NH₄Cl.
- Air-dry on a paper towel.

## Safety Notes:
- ⚠️ Work in a **ventilated area** (ammonia fumes possible).
- 🔥 KNO₃ is an **oxidizer** – keep away from flammables.
- 🧤 Use gloves/eye protection if available.

## Alternative Method (NaNO₃ + KCl):
- Replace NH₄NO₃ with **sodium nitrate** (NaNO₃).
- Reaction:
  `NaNO₃ + KCl → KNO₃ + NaCl`
- KNO₃ crystallizes out first due to solubility differences.

# Potassium Nitrate from Urine/Manure (Historical Method)
⚠️ **Warning**: This method is impractical, hazardous, and not recommended for actual use.
🚫 **Risks**: Pathogens, ammonia fumes, and inconsistent results.

## Materials Needed:
- **Urine** or **aged manure** (high-nitrogen source)
- **Wood ash** (for potassium carbonate, K₂CO₃)
- **Water**
- **Large container** (e.g., wooden barrel)
- **Straw or porous material** (for aeration)
- **Time** (~6–12 months)

## Procedure:

### 1. Nitrification (Bacterial Conversion)
- Fill a barrel with **layers of straw and manure/urine-soaked soil**.
- Keep moist and aerated (stir occasionally).
- Bacteria convert urea/ammonia into **nitrates** (NO₃⁻) over months.

### 2. Leach Nitrates
- After ~1 year, pour **hot water** through the composted mixture.
- Collect the liquid runoff (contains calcium nitrate, Ca(NO₃)₂).

### 3. Extract Potassium Nitrate
- Mix runoff with **wood ash lye** (K₂CO₃) to precipitate calcium carbonate:
  `Ca(NO₃)₂ + K₂CO₃ → 2 KNO₃ + CaCO₃↓`
- Filter and evaporate the liquid to isolate crude KNO₃ crystals.

## Problems:
- 🦠 **Biohazard**: Urine/feces contain dangerous pathogens.
- 🐌 **Extremely slow** (requires months/years).
- 💧 **Low yield** (impure, inefficient).

## Modern Alternative:
- Use **store-bought NH₄NO₃ + KCl** (see previous guide) for safer, faster results.
