Yeah, the point at which He says "Father Forgive them, they know not what they do" does seem to be directed more at the Roman Guards Crucifying Him in ignorance than the Pharisees and Scribes, who absolutely *did know* Who they were killing, or at least had more than reasonable evidence to have concluded that the Guy casting out demons and raising people from the dead might actually be the Son of God. They crucified Him out of envy. The statement *might* have also been directed at the crowd the Pharisees whipped up into demanding His execution, but again, its abundantly clear He had enough of a following among the Jews due to the Palm Sunday event and all the women weeping over Him that the average Jew in Jerusalem knew who He was as well. The Romans were probably aware of the various Messianic Prophecies floating around at the time (not just from the Hebrews, but also a bunch of other oracles as well had predicted the Birth of Christ, which is why there are references to the Sibylline Oracles in the Requiem Mass), but likely didnt suspect (or care, since the Romans were more interested in managing their regional affairs than possible world altering events that didnt immediately effect them) that Christ was the Messiah.
