> *"In the very first episode of the Superman cartoons produced by Fleischer Studios in the early 1940s, Superman battles a "mad scientist" who attempts to destroy Metropolis with an energy cannon. This villain is based off Nikola Tesla, who in the mid-1930s began proposing an energy weapon to be used for defense in war. Tesla was portrayed as the bad guy but in reality he was opposed to war. Most of his family was in the military, and he lived through both world wars so he understood the necessity of defense against the brutes of world. His proposal was to make war impossible by giving every country equal defense against these evils. He wanted to end war."* [Link](https://www.tumblr.com/drnikolatesla/177099133448/in-the-very-first-episode-of-the-superman-cartoons)
Of course the (((Fleischer ))) tribe would be opposed to world peace. I've seen these cartoons but hadn't made that connection. It's interesting to see how Lois Lane was kind of a "Mary Sue" even then, often showing her taking the initiative while men around her cower. If I recall, she climbs inside a robot during this episode, which takes her to the "mad scientists" lair. There, she fights him until Superman arrives to finish him off. In the next episode, she leaps from one train car to another, then picks up a machine gun to fight off some goons trying to hijack a train. I always found it absurd how often she goes up against men four times her size, especially for a cartoon made in the 1930s.
