My parents weren't boomers.
The only major mistake my dad made (really my grandpa) was getting off of the land and trying to make money with a career. I'm reversing that mistake as we speak.

Your grandpa probably got fooled by big AG that you need to invest in fertilisers and chemicals to make a profit, but then when the margins disappeared after some decades because his machines weren't large enough or efficient, you just decide to pack it in and do something else.
Small scale farming with minimal external inputs is where it is at, and forget about growing cereals or corn, it's all about the ruminants (whichever you choose).
No, he was a shepherder in the mountains. He left and ended up joining the marines in WWII. After that he got trained as an accountant and made a pretty good life doing that.
