I think it’s simpler. I think most people however cynical are still just people. So you tend to give people the benefit of the doubt when they appear to outwardly show you kindness/friendliness.

This means When they start to screw you, at first you have doubt, and are not sure what to do.

Rather than just going full ape mode in their ass.

Yes, but it’s mostly a white thing, especially today. This use to be a good thing, but now we’re in a war, and most of us keep pretending we’re not.
