On 19 March 1988, the British Army corporals Derek Wood and David Howes were killed by the Provisional IRA in Belfast, Northern Ireland, in what became known as the corporals killings.
Wearing civilian clothes, both armed with Browning Hi-Power pistols and in a civilian car, the soldiers drove into the funeral procession of an IRA member, seemingly by mistake. Three days before, the loyalist Michael Stone had attacked an IRA funeral and killed three people. Believing the soldiers were loyalists intent on repeating Stone's attack, dozens of people surrounded and attacked their car. During this, Corporal Wood drew his service pistol and fired a shot into the air. The soldiers were then dragged from the car and taken to a nearby sports ground where they were beaten, stripped and searched. They were then driven to a nearby waste ground where they were shot dead.
I was 18 in 1987 and lived in Central England, not NI so my perspective was not what it is now.
It's not hard to be sympathetic to the Irish Catholic cause. The were being genocided, both murderously and through migration of English hardcore protestants to Northern Ireland and making them the police. Then these guys also became the UVF and UFF etc.
But exploding bombs on the public is not a great way to garner popular support either.
And then there's the psyops - false flag bombing ops by the British etc.
And the only info stream was British TV, newspapers and magazines - all partisan.
So basically "wow, that's crazy, those people are mental"
He had one of the worst kill rates out of any mass killer. 3 dead, 60 wounded. The only guy off the top of my head that did worse was a dune coon in belguim, 6 dead, 120+ wounded.
He was freed because of politics, but then he went back to jail in the mid 2000's because he did a second high score attempt where he only managed to injure some people.
He was realised in the early 2020's, thus making him one of the only free mass killers.
He has a wife and some kids i think. Not sure why a woman would want to marry a killer, but i guess women love bad boys.
He killed some people before the graveyard attack, thus making him a serial killer as well as a mass killer.
His jacket that he wore during the attack was auctioned for a lot of money, just like personal items owned by virginia tech shooter, whose calculator was sold on Ebay for over 3000 shekels.
The attack has some footage out there, it may vary well be one of the first filmed mass shootings.

It still seems surreal that England had to deal with an insurgency so close to home, and so recently too.
How would you say the UVF and the others are viewed today in England? Brutal as it all was, they did advance the English cause.
