I learned in public chool that the reason for this was the earth's curve and a superiority complex of Europeans as they dominated the world through colonialism. Now I know that this is to make white countries seem larger than they are and to make whites people seem like less of a global minority.

Huh. Interesting. Distorted Russia looks massive, like it could cover africa and have room to spare.
This is probably more because tring to depict a round thing on a map leads to distortion, rather than anything political related.

Thats kinda what I was taught. But thinking about it for a minute makes me wonder WHY certain places are depicted smaller or larger, as it seems totally inconsistent and unrelated to longitude.
