Its how you can tell their actual Religion is not that of the Hebrews, but some form of Canaanite Gnosticism. Gnosticism teaches salvation through knowledge (without the input of God, as you mentioned) first and foremost, and that is exactly the lie the devil sold Adam and Eve in the Garden.
