Better to have a single higher efficiency powerplant outside of the city instead of hundreds of thousands of individual combustion engines spewing fumes where people live.
And that's assuming the same source. Many countries are hitting over 50% non-fossil-fuel electricity generation.

I crunched the numbers back in school (~20 years ago) because I was interested in EVs. It's significantly more efficient to burn gasoline in a power plant and then transmit the power over lines to charge batteries than use individual engines, simply because your car engine is almost always running at inefficient RPMs. That's also why hybrids are more efficient than full gas, even though they weigh more.

The problem with EVs is they are a means of control. Eventually the smart charging station won't charge you because you said nigger in some comment.
